Highlight recipe: Surmai (Seer) fish curry
TWCT is glad to publish its highlight recipe no. 2 today, Surmai (Seer) fish curry by Mrs. Aparna Naidu Kumar. Aparna is from Mumbai, India and is a brilliant home chef who shares the best of her regional recipes with us. Today she has shared a popular Konkan (coastal region) delight, Seer fish curry which is flavorful and spicy.
Recipe follows.
Ingredients -
- 1/2 kg Surmai fish
- 4 medium size onions ( sliced)
- 1/2 cup dessicated coconut grated
- 1 pod of garlic
- 2-3tsp of red chilli powder ( kashmiri mirch )
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 1tbsp coriander powder
- 1tsp mustard seeds
- 2-3 medium size tomatoes
- Small lemon size tamarind ( soak it in water for pulp )
- Oil
- Fry sliced Onions / garlic / coconut in 1tsp of oil . Thereafter grind it to a fine paste along with few coriander leaves and coriander powder
- Make tomato puree and keep it aside.
- Take good amount of oil in a deep vessel heat it and add mustard seeds.
- Saute the paste prepared in the first step and in it add turmeric powder, red chili powder,salt.
- Later pour in the tomato puree and saute it well. After a while add one and half cup of water (you can add more or less water depending upon the consistency you want ).
- Season the gravy with salt as per your taste and cover it and cook well.
- Lastly add the fish pieces and let it cook on simmer for a while until the fish pieces are cooked. At the end add the tamarind pulp and let the fish curry cook on simmer for 2-3 mins.
- Garnish with coriander leaves .
- Serve hot with rice
