Black Rice Jalpan (breakfast meal)


Ruma's super food special recipe Forbidden Black Rice Jalpan, is a nice aromatic breakfast recipe. It is loaded with goodness of this rare verity of rice, clarified butter, aromatic Indian spices, jaggery and finally some orange zest.

Fun Facts about black rice: The black rice has high nutritional value, it is gluten free, gut friendly, rich in antioxidants and dietary fiber. It is also low on calories and high on protein content. In Imperial China, Black rice was forbidden for commoners and was only consumed by the emperor, which makes this rice very exotic.


Recipe Follows :


  • Take properly cleaned and washed two cups of black rice which was soaked in water overnight.
  •  In the morning heated a tbs clarified butter in a pressure cooker and fry some cashew nuts.
  •  Remove from the butter keep aside the fried nuts. 
  •  Add two green cardamom, 1/2 “ stick of cinnamon and two bay leaves into the remaining butter.
  •  When spices release aroma add the rice straining from the water and stir fry for a minute.
  •  Don’t throw away the rice soaked water as it is used for cooking the rice. Now add the water into the pressure cooker.
  •  Stirring well add some grated jaggery as per your taste and pressure cook.
  •  After two three whistle cook in a low heat for 25 to 30 minuets, as black rice take little more time to cook.
  • Release the steam automatically and garnish with some orange zest.
  • Serve with cold milk or you can use thick evaporated milk too for a rich flavour. 
  • But l love to relish it simply with low calorie cooled milk. It’s heavenly delicious.
